You and HADRIN venture to long forgotten earth to save your people

This project is a farming exploration saga based around the interactions between you and an AI. No others have come with you on this adventure, and the burden of providing for your far away world rests on your shoulders. The main focus of the game lies upon the interactions between the player and his AI companions. These AI subjects accomplish many tasks, and the job of farming this world would be impossible without them. How you treat the AI’s has very real consequences in the game, the worse you treat them the harder your task becomes. As you explore and farm this world you will encounter an environment which is responsive to your choices. Your success or failure completely depends on these choices . Also incorporated into the game is a fair amount of information on the subject of farming itself. This information specifically pertains to farming in New Mexico, adding an element of realism to the game. The goal is to get players having fun and maybe doing a little learning along the way.

Technical details

This game is based in ARIS, and requires some movement outdoors. The locations are centered on UNM campus and should all be within walking distance. The game can also be played a little bit at a time, there is no requirement that the player finishes the game all at once.

Progress

Right now, we have created a pretty simple version of the game that features its main conflicts and mechanics. This version of the game is a prototype which will hopefully let us know what works and doesn’t work in the game’s framework. The game should be developed enough that players get our main message and are able to respond to it in some way. Playtesting this game will help us know if the game works and if it should be expanded further.

Next steps

In development, the next steps will be to expand the game and build the in-game world around the basic mechanics. Things like side quests, artwork, and backstory will help transform this game into what we want it to be. Right now we have a very basic game, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. With this version we have what we need to figure out what works and what doesn’t. That being said, eventually we want a game with which people can really connect, and that is going to take some time. As the game is expanded, the learning elements of the game will have to be expanded as well. Eventually I want to add some more information to the game which the player can carry out as knowledge. We also need to think about the playability of the game in the future. Who will be playing the game and how will they find it? Will there be a marketing campaign? These are all questions which need to be addressed.

Why you should support this project

Right Now HADRIN is really beginning to develop, and I think the game has a lot of potential. The theme which we have developed the most concerns the treatment of those who produce our food on the most basic level. This theme is not only prevalent worldwide, but is also very present on a local level. Right here in New Mexico are the people who harvest and produce our food always treated in the right way? Even within the context of our beloved green chili, we are not always treating people ethically when it comes to food production. Developing this theme is something that will be very important to later versions of the game. With your support we can bring this theme and others to life with artwork, more stories, and more time.

Risks and challenges

One of the greatest challenges we encountered in the development of HADRIN was fitting it to our platform of choice, ARIS. ARIS was a good choice for us because it’s simple platform that allowed us to focus more on story and mechanics than code, but it also came with some constraints. Figuring out how to fit our idea to all the different elements of ARIS was a challenge, but we were able to come out on the other side with some really cool mechanics. Mainly the geographical element of ARIS took some developmental adjustments that changed the game in some pretty unique ways. During development we also had to adjust the complexity of our game idea. Right off the batt, I wanted to make a game that addressed at least five different very complex themes. Adjusting that goal and just really running with one theme helped us focus up and create a much more coherent game.

The Team

Craig Still
Born and raised in Corvallis Oregon, Craig is a biochem major at the University of New Mexico.
